Warbler Maki-e Fountain Pen
“Ume, Uguisu & Take” or Plum Blossoms, Bush Warbler and Bamboo. This pen depicts elements from two seasons - spring & winter.
Ume is considered the true flower of spring - the original flower that started tradition of “Hanami” or flower watching parties - it depicts good fortune and wards off evil and is planted around shrines.
It also depicts a sense of maturity and is mentioned in the “Legend of Michizane” when he laments about missing his plum tree when he is relocated to a distant land.
Ume are often depicted with “Uguisu” or Bush Warbler a singing bird, popular as a cage bird and it signifies early spring. This bird is embedded in Japanese culture - Uguisu-jo (jo means woman) are female announcers at major Japanese events.
Uguisu-Bari is a special type of floor with squeeking floor boards that sound like the Warbler’s low pitched chirping. The Ume are made of tiny mother of pearl fragments, gold and red Urushi. The Warbler with its beak pointed upwards is made of gold with olive hue on top and silvery underbelly, perching on golden branch of a Plum blossom. The rear of the pen depicts Bamboo one of the three trees (friends) of winter.
Bamboo is the second of the three trees of winter and represents masculinity and tenacity for men and evergreen youth and grace for women. The golden bamboo with green leaves depicted on this pen is exquisite. Very limited unnumbered edition of two pens. Nib is a no. 20, 18 carat solid gold nib.
