Description
Up for bid is the 1941 Gold and Blue, the yearbook of Mitchell High School in Mitchell, Indiana. This yearbook is from Virgil "Gus" Grissom's freshman year, and the future Mercury astronaut is pictured in it. Grissom, who grew up in Mitchell, was one of the original NASA Project Mercury astronauts and a United States Air Force pilot. He was the second American to fly in space, and the first member of the NASA Astronaut Corps to fly in space twice. Grissom was killed along with fellow astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee during a pre-launch test for the Apollo 1 mission at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station (then known as Cape Kennedy), Florida. He was the first of the Mercury Seven to die. He was also a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross and, posthumously, the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. This 36-page spiral-bound yearbook is extremely rare. It contains an individual photo of Gus Grissom as a member of the freshman class. He may be pictured elsewhere in the book, as a member of an organization or club, but some of those photos are not identified. This yearbook is in very good condition, with minor soiling on several pages.
